VA Homeless Veteran Dental Initiative
Posted: 6/19/2006
The Veterans Health Administration's Homeless Veteran Dental Program (HVDP) is pleased to announce that the Undersecretary for Health has approved a new collaborative pilot involving the VA Office of Mental Health Services and the VA Office of Dentistry. Approximately $9 million will be used to provide limited dental care for eligible homeless veterans during FY 2006-2007. Homeless veterans who are either in a Grant and per Diem program or a Domiciliary Care for Homeless Veteran program will be targeted with this funding.
Given the fact that dental care is consistently one of the top 3 unmet needs of homeless veterans, this is certainly a step in the right direction. Looking forward, funding to keep this need met will be a challenge. The HVDP welcomes ideas regarding future initiatives to meet the dental needs of all of our homeless veterans.
