Senate Committee on Veterans Affairs Chair Sen. Larry Craig (R-ID), author of the Veterans Health Care Act of 2005, and Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL), committee member who introduced the "Sheltering All Veterans Everywhere Act" and the "Homes for Heroes Act" in the 109<SUP>th</SUP> Congress, spoke of the need for the federal government to intensify its support of veteran assistance programs during the opening session.</DIV> <DIV>&nbsp;</DIV> <DIV>Assistant Secretary of Labor Charles "Chick" Ciccolella of the Veterans Employment and Training Service reaffirmed his agency's commitment to the nation's service providers during the opening ceremonies, which featured appearances from three formerly homeless veterans who now serve their communities in leadership positions. The 2006 Jerald Washington Memorial Founders Award  the highest honor bestowed by NCHV  was presented to Rep. Lane Evans (D-IL), ranking member of the House Veterans Affairs Committee and longtime ally of NCHV since its founding in 1990.&nbsp; </DIV> <DIV>&nbsp;</DIV> <DIV>Workshops were presented on issues ranging from Department of Labor homeless veteran employment assistance programs to women veteran issues that community-based organizations and VA facilities need to address. Eighteen government agencies participated in the Conference, led by the U.S. Departments of Veterans Affairs, Labor and Housing and Urban Development, and the Social Security Administration. &nbsp;&nbsp;</DIV> <DIV>&nbsp;</DIV> <DIV>Post-Conference evaluations rated the conference as excellent overall  giving special commendation for its instructional value and for the L'Enfant Plaza Hotel facility and service. The 2007 NCHV Annual Conference will also be held at the L'Enfant Plaza, so mark your calendars now for June 3-7, 2007.</DIV> <DIV>&nbsp;</DIV> <DIV><STRONG>San Diego Stand Down Hosts Special Homeless Court Training Program</STRONG></DIV> <DIV>&nbsp;</DIV> <DIV>The American Bar Association, Office of the San Diego Public Defender and Veterans Village of San Diego (VVSD) are offering a unique opportunity for homeless veteran service providers to observe the nation's first Homeless Court in action at the 17<SUP>th</SUP> Annual San Diego Stand Down for Homeless Veterans, July 14-16, at San Diego High School. </DIV> <DIV>&nbsp;</DIV> <DIV>The purpose of this training opportunity is to offer service providers a better understanding of how the Homeless Court program works so they may replicate a similar program in their communities. Key players from the Homeless Court Program will provide participants with a review of the history and the development of homeless court at Stand Down, answer questions from observers and discuss what resources are needed to implement the program. Afterward, observers are invited to participate in Stand Down's open microphone and closing ceremonies. There is no fee for this three-day training opportunity, but participants must register with the San Diego Stand Down by July 8. Awards NCHV $50,000 Grant to Support Operations, Advocacy</STRONG></DIV> <DIV>&nbsp;</DIV> <DIV>The Northrop Grumman Corporation  one of the world's leaders in defense technology and systems engineering  has awarded NCHV a $50,000 grant to support its operations and advocacy efforts on behalf of America's veterans. The grant will strengthen the organization's presence on Capitol Hill in the campaign to end and prevent homelessness among veterans, particularly its work with Congress and the federal agencies that administer veteran-specific housing and supportive services programs.</DIV> <DIV>&nbsp;</DIV> <DIV>Northrop Grumman Corp. is a global defense company headquartered in Los Angeles. VETS is now accepting applications for Stand Down grant awards. A Stand Down is an event held in a local community where homeless veterans are provided a wide variety of social services. Up to $325,000 will be available for FY 2006 grant awards, up to a maximum of $8,000 per event. However, if the event is held for one (1) day, the maximum amount is $5,000. VETS expects to award approximately forty (40) grants. Applications for Stand Down funds will be accepted from State Workforce Agencies and State and local Workforce Investment Boards, Veterans Service Organizations (VSO), local public agencies, and nonprofit organizations, including community and faith-based organizations. </DIV> <DIV>&nbsp;</DIV> <DIV>VETS is not authorized to award these grant funds to organizations that are registered with Internal Revenue Service (IRS) as a 501(c)(4) organization.</DIV> <DIV>&nbsp;</DIV> <DIV>Deadline: All Stand Down grant requests must be received by the appropriate State Director for Veterans' Employment and Training (DVET), who serves as the Grant Officer Technical Representative (GOTR), no later than 60 days prior to the event and by no later than June 30, 2006, for events that occur on or prior to November 30, 2006. As a part of this effort, the foundation awards grants to women's shelters across the United States. With the exception of travel, the funds awarded by the foundation may be used for the operating expenses of the shelter. Failure to receive a grant does not prohibit the shelter from applying the following year.
